Sure Start

Sure Start, Rosehill is a lively, colourful, nursery and community centre, wrapped around a south facing garden creating an oasis of calm for young children in a fairly busy and cosmopolitan area of Derby. ‘The Big Building’ was the winning entry when local school children were invited to choose a name.

The Big Building is designed around passive solar principles……

Our clients purchased a Grade 2 Listed thatched cottage with a sunny but long and thin, rear garden.

The cottage had limited space, and was cold, damp and expensive to heat. As a consequence, previous tenants had not stayed long and the building was neglected. Improving the thermal performance was difficult as a result of the buildings listed status, which ruled out insulating the walls and installing double glazing…….

Forester’s Lodge

Forster’s Lodge, Two Dales

Forester’s Lodge is a Grade 2 Listed former Coach House. The building is an interesting example of its kind, symmetrically organized around a central tower, however, a freak flash flood rendered the building uninhabitable and our client had to move into rented accommodation. This was seen as an opportunity to re-model and extend the building.

We simplified the window patterns to create more light and drama. False ceilings were removed which, in addition to exposing the historic roof structure, allowed us to introduce a series of galleries with service space….

‘The Bowl’

We were invited to look at what could be done with a huge bowling green in Hornscroft Park, Bolsover.

Unused for nine years, the green was becoming a problem to local residents as an informal gathering place for anti-social behaviour.

Working with Mary Wardle, a landscape designer, we proposed cutting gently sloping terraces into the green space. Edged with railway sleepers each terrace created an edge to sit on and an outdoor amphitheatre for formal or informal use within which 2000 people could gather.

Our clients wanted to construct a single story home for themselves, as their current house had become difficult for them to live in. They did not want to leave the village and their friends so hoped to build a suitable dwelling in their garden.

We suggested constructing a building with a mono-pitch roof off two low walls to the boundary…..
